What steel plate thickness should I specify for a steel top industrial table?
3/16" plate is adequate for general-purpose heavy assembly, staging, and light fabrication work where impact loads are moderate. 1/4" plate is standard for welding staging, press brake operations, and applications with frequent heavy part placement. 3/8" plate is specified for heavy weld fixtures, large casting inspection, and applications with very high point loads or grinding operations on the surface. Plate thickness is confirmed based on the worst-case point load and allowable deflection.
Can steel top industrial tables be used for welding ground connections?
Yes. Hot-rolled steel surfaces make direct contact with welding ground clamps. For repetitive welding operations, a dedicated ground clamp mount point is welded to the table frame to prevent ground arcing through the frame-to-surface connection. The aluminum T-slot frame must be electrically isolated from the welding circuit to prevent arc damage to the extrusion surface — an isolating pad under the steel plate accomplishes this.
How is the steel surface attached to the aluminum T-slot frame?
The steel plate rests on precision-machined ledge rails welded or fastened to the aluminum frame upper cross-members. T-bolt hold-down clamps fasten the steel plate to the frame at four to six points — allowing the steel plate to expand and contract with temperature changes without warping the frame. The hold-down positions are located at the frame cross-member T-slots, not through the steel plate surface, preserving the usable surface area.
Do steel top tables need to be leveled?
Yes. Adjustable leveling feet provide 1 inch of total height adjustment. For welding fixture work where the surface must be level to within 0.010" for weld joint geometry, precision leveling (using a machinist level) is performed after leveling foot adjustment. For heavy assembly and staging applications where exact level is not critical, floor-contact adjustment of the leveling feet is sufficient.
Are stainless steel surface options available?
Yes. 304 and 316 stainless steel plate surfaces are available for food-grade, pharmaceutical, and corrosive environment applications. Stainless surfaces are specified with a No. 4 brushed or 2B mill finish. Passivation treatment documentation is provided for FDA and GMP compliance. Stainless steel plate is harder to grind and weld than hot-rolled steel — confirm the intended use before specifying stainless.
