What surface material is best for a cleanroom workstation?
For most cleanroom applications, phenolic laminate or 304 stainless steel are the preferred surface materials. Phenolic laminate is non-porous, wipeable with IPA and most cleaning agents, and generates no particles during normal use. Stainless steel is required when the surface must be sterilized, regularly washed down, or used in direct food or pharmaceutical product contact. ESD-dissipative laminate is used when the cleanroom also requires static control.
Can an ESD workstation also have a stainless steel surface?
Standard 304 stainless steel is conductive rather than dissipative — its surface resistivity is well below the 10⁶ Ω lower limit for ESD-safe classification. For an ESD-compliant stainless-look surface, Modular Solutions offers a stainless steel-faced ESD laminate composite that provides the stainless appearance with the correct dissipative resistivity. Confirm the specific resistivity requirement with your ESD coordinator before specifying.
How flat is a granite work surface?
Grade B laboratory granite surface plates (the standard for workstation tops) are flat to within 0.001″ over 12 inches for plates up to 24 × 36 inches. Grade AA reference-grade plates are flat to 0.000125″ over 12 inches. Workstation applications typically use Grade B, which is sufficient for CMM setup, surface plate inspection, and precision measurement.
Can I get a custom cutout for a scale or fixture in any surface material?
Yes. CNC-machined cutouts are available in all surface materials including stainless, phenolic, granite, and HDPE. Stainless cutouts are finished with a routed radius or brushed trim ring. Phenolic and laminate cutouts can receive a polished edge or grommet. Granite cutouts are diamond-wheel routed with a polished edge. Cutout dimensions must be submitted on the workstation order drawing for accurate machining.
How is the ESD surface resistivity documented for compliance records?
Every ESD workstation surface is tested at final inspection using a calibrated surface resistance meter per ANSI/ESD S4.1. The measured surface resistivity value is recorded on the workstation shipment documentation and can be included in a Certificate of Conformance for ANSI/ESD S20.20 compliance records. Retest services are available for periodic ESD verification after field use.
