Washdown partitions use 304 or 316 stainless steel extrusion or clear anodized aluminum extrusion as the frame, stainless steel panel infills or high-pressure laminate panels as the wall surface, and stainless steel or plastic fasteners throughout. All joints are sealed with NSF-approved silicone sealant that resists CIP (clean-in-place) chemicals, hot water, and steam. No carbon steel, bare aluminum, or porous materials are used in any surface that contacts the washdown water.
Stainless steel 316 frame partitions are compatible with most CIP chemicals used in food and beverage production including caustic soda (NaOH) up to 5%, nitric acid up to 3%, peracetic acid, quaternary ammonia, and chlorine-based sanitizers up to 200ppm. Compatibility of specific chemicals with gasket and sealant materials should be confirmed with the manufacturer's chemical resistance chart. Partition frames should be designed with no horizontal surfaces that retain water after washdown — all horizontal framing members should be canted or tubular with drain holes at low points. Panel infills should slope or be vertical. The floor-to-wall junction uses a coved stainless steel base profile (coved base) that seals the gap without creating a horizontal ledge where water and bacteria accumulate. Drain provisions at the base of the partition ensure washdown water drains to facility floor drains.
Washdown partition panel systems with sealed joints and no open cavities achieve effective IP55 or IP65 wash-resistance at the wall surface (protection against water jets from any direction). The partition frame itself is not IP-rated as a complete assembly, but individual electrical components (switch boxes, interlock housings, and indicator lights) mounted on the partition are specified at IP65 or IP69K for high-pressure hot washdown environments.
Washdown partitions should be inspected quarterly for joint sealant integrity, corrosion at fastener points, and condition of gaskets at panel-to-frame interfaces. Sealant can be stripped and reapplied in place without removing panels. Stainless steel surfaces should be passivated annually using a citric acid or nitric acid passivation treatment to restore the passive oxide layer after welding, grinding, or chemical exposure.
